Atma and Paramatma are within the body, but due to the darkness of ignorance in this material existence, one cannot understand them. Just as in the darkness, one requires a torchlight (dipam) to see, similarly, to understand the nature of atma and Paramatma, one needs Srimad-Bhagavatam, the transcendental torchlight (adhyatma dipam). Bhagavatam is the essence of entire Vedic literature (akhila-sruti-saram) and is spoken by Sukadeva Gosvami after personally assimilating it (svanubhavam), out of his compassion (karunayaha) upon the gross materialists (samsarinam). This powerful torchlight enables the men of Kaliyuga who lost their vision, to develop proper perspective and to transcend this dark material existence (atititirsatam tamo ’ndham). [Based on Srila Prabhupada’s explanations on SB 1.2.3]

The incomparable torchlight of knowledge (jnanapradipah), Srimad-Bhagavatam, was personally revealed to Brahma by the Supreme Lord, in the beginning of creation. Brahma later spoke it to Narada, who narrated it to Vyasa, who later revealed it to Sukadeva Gosvami, who then mercifully spoke it to Pariksit. (SB 12.13.19)

Vaisnavanam priyam

Srimad-Bhagavatam is very dear to the devotees. It propounds that Lord Krsna is the Supreme Absolute Truth and establishes the supremacy of Bhakti yoga as the unparalleled process to attain Him. Anyone who contemplates on the Bhagavatam and who properly hears and chants it with devotion becomes completely liberated (tac chrnvan su-pathan vicaranaparo bhaktya vimucyen narah, SB 12.13.18).

Blessings of Bhagavan Through Bhagavatam

Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu declared that Srimad-Bhagavatam is the spotless sound representation of all Vedic knowledge and history. Srimad-Bhagavatam is the literary incarnation of Lord Sri Krsna and is therefore nondifferent from Him. Srimad-Bhagavatam should be worshiped as respectfully as we worship the Lord. Thereby we can derive the ultimate blessings of the Lord through its careful and patient study. As God is all light, all bliss and all perfection, so also is Srimad-Bhagavatam. We can have all the transcendental light of the Supreme Brahman, Sri Krsna, from the recitation of Srimad-Bhagavatam, provided it is received through the medium of the transparent spiritual master. Lord Caitanya’s private secretary Srila Svarupa Damodara Gosvami advised all intending visitors who came to see the Lord at Puri to make a study of the Bhagavatam from the person Bhagavatam. Person Bhagavatam is the self-realized bona fide spiritual master, and through him only can one understand the lessons of Bhagavatam in order to receive the desired result. One can derive from the study of the Bhagavatam all benefits that are possible to be derived from the personal presence of the Lord. It carries with it all the transcendental blessings of Lord Sri Krsna that we can expect from His personal contact. (SB 1.3.40 P)

sarva-vedanta-saram hi sri-bhagavatam isyate
tad-rasamrta-trptasya nanyatra syad ratih kvacit
Srimad-Bhagavatam is declared to be the essence of all Vedanta philosophy. One who has felt satisfaction from its nectarean mellow will never be attracted to any other literature. (SB 12.13.15)
