When Lord Krishna was leaving for Dwarka, the ladies of Hastinapur were very anxious about Him, and as usual tears began to roll down their cheeks. They thought at the same time that, tears at that moment might be cause of misfortune for Krishna therefore they wanted to check them but it was very difficult for them to stop the tears. Therefore they smeared the tears in their eyes and their hearts pounded.
Who were these ladies?
These ladies were the wives & daughter in laws of those who died in the battle of Kurukshetra. Apparently Lord Krishna was the cause of their misfortune being the cause of the war and untimely death of their husbands; still these ladies were anxious not to be cause of so called misfortune of the Lord by shedding tears. These ladies never before came in contact with Lord Krishna but all of them heard about Him and His great activities and they thought of Him, talked about Him, His name, fame etc… and became affectionate also, exactly like those who were in direct contact of Lord. Therefore directly or indirectly anyone who thinks of Krishna, talks about Him or worship Him becomes attached to him and gets purified .
Sarva sruti Manoharah!
Therefore when these ladies on the tops of their houses were talking about the Lord, their talk was more pleasing than Vedic hymns. The goal of all Vedic literature is to know about Lord (BG 15.15). Srila Prabhupada in this context says that, “Anything sung in the praise of the Lord is sruti mantra,” Thus the talks of these ladies were more pleasing to Lord. Similarly the songs of acharyas like Narottama Das Thakur, Bhaktivinoda Thakur are written in simple Bengali language but they are as good as Vedic mantras because they are composed out of pure devotion as that of simple talks of Hastinapur ladies.
Srila Prabhupada explains that, such compositions are non-different from Vedic hymns because of their subject matter; language is immaterial (SB 1.5.11). Although these ladies might not be very learned scholars in Sanskrit, they were absorbed in the thoughts and actions of Lord, thus developed the consciousness of Vedic wisdom by the grace of the Lord. This is the qualification to please the Lord.
What about Devotional movies, audio albums & books by people not practicing our path of Krishna consciousness?
- As clearly mentioned above purpose of all activities should be to please the Lord as stated Srimad Bhagavatam (1.2.13)
Atah pumbhir dvija-srestha varnasrama-vibhagasah
Svanusthitasya dharmasya samsiddhir hari-tosanam
- If such devotional movies, audio albums & books are made by people not practicing our path of Krishna consciousness then
- Such items will simply entertain people and not change their lives.
- In spite of watching, hearing and reading if people don’t develop devotional service unto the supreme personality of godhead then such things are only waste of time.
Dharmah svanusthitah pumsam visvaksena-kathasu yah
Notpaddayed yadi ratim srama eva hi kevalam -SB (1.2.8)
Rather such items may mislead people.
E.g. A novel written by a Maharashtrian author named ‘Mrityunjaya’ is just a speculation about Mahabharata. It is not only incorrect in information but also in its spirit of representation and yet it is one of the most famous novels in Marathi language and thus it has not only caused confusion in common people but also caused bewilderment of innocent.
There are many misinterpreted editions of Srimad Bhagavad Gita which people are reading hundreds of times still not understanding the purpose of Gita.
Many times devotional movies are not composed with the purpose of enlightenment of people and just to make money. Such movies are not only devoid of true subject matter but are distorted in the history and the essence, thus many times it gives heroic status to demonic and villains status to devotees. E.g. people glorify Karna whereas criticize Arjuna
Once I went in a friend’s house and the family started discussing about Mahabharata. They were describing Duryodhana, Karna etc to be righteous and Pandavas, Lord Krishna to be unrighteous. I was shocked to hear that, I tried to convince them but they were elderly and they said that they know Mahabharata since the time before I was not born so don’t tell us. Their source was all unauthorized movies and other literature.
- Thus as stated in Padma Purana
Avaishnavmukhodgirnam putam harikathamritam
Sravanam naiva kartavyam sarpocchistha yatha payah
A non-devotee even if he speaks about Krishna, a sincere practitioner should not hear from him as milk becomes poison after being touched by a venomous snake.
- What to speak of non-devotees but to hear Krishna-katha from so called devotees, who are sahajiyas and professional Bhagavatam reciters, is also equally harmful for the serious spiritual practitioner.
- Yet another class called as Mayavadi who don’t accept transcendental form of Lord is also dangerous. Lord Chaitanya strictly warned about hearing from mayavadi that,
“Mayavadi-bhasya sunile haya sarva-nasa”
Anyone who hears mayavadi philosophy is certainly doomed.
Krishna-katha by a neophyte practitioner of Krishna Consciousness
Krishna-katha by a neophyte practitioner of Krishna Consciousness is much better than the big big Bhagvata Kathas done by professional Bhagavatam reciters whose aim is to earn money and engage in sense gratification. Such kathas by professional reciters never change hearts of people, these reciters directly jump on the confidential pastimes of Lord without any qualification and they make a drama of crying and their followers so also and they engage in all kinds of abominable sinful activities.
On the other hand a neophyte practitioner who is sincerely following the path of bhakti, strictly following religious principles, repeating the message as it is received from bonafide spiritual master, and simply acting as an instrument in the hands of spiritual master and Krishna is as good as a pure devotee and he has the potential to change hearts of people.
Most of the ISKCON preachers in the early days are example of this. Srila Prabhupada trained his neophyte disciples who had never even heard name of Krishna and sent them for preaching in different parts of the world and we can see the result now. Not only these devotees have become advanced themselves but also they have made others into advanced devotees on the path of Krishna consciousness.
It is confirmed in SB (1.5.11) tad-vag visargo janatagh-viplavo……
“Although imperfectly composed if that literature is full of descriptions of transcendental glories of name, fame and pastimes of supreme Lord, it is heard, sung and accepted by pure devotees.”
Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu has ordered everybody to preach his message in CC Madhya (7.127)
yare dekha, tare kaha krsna-upadesa
amara ajnaya guru hana tara ei desa
Thus it is duty of each and every individual to spread this mission of Lord as per his capacity.
Prthivite ache yata nagaradi grama
Sarvatra pracara haibe mora nama
“In every town and village, the chanting of my name will be heard”
Thus no one can check the spread of Krishna consciousness movement because this movement has the benediction of supreme personality of Godhead Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Thus one should not wait for preaching till he becomes a pure devotee rather by preaching he will become pure very soon. Lord Krishna also confirms this in BG (18.68-69) that one who spreads this knowledge is most dear to him and there is no one dearer to him nor will there be ever.
Over and above all of this it is the urgency, need of the society. People are heading to towards hell with the rocket speed. Whole world is suffering due to the fire of material existence. To extinguish this fire Lord Chaitanya needs the help of all kinds of devotees. When there is fire one takes help from anybody whether he is younger or elder, white or black, pure or not pure. If a house is on fire one conveys message to the people inside even though the languages of communication are different, the purpose is somehow or other to save the people. Similarly even though one is not perfect in spiritual knowledge still one should try to save people at his best as they are dying for the want of Krishna consciousness. Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur also supported the same principle and he would often say the only problem in this world is lack of Krishna Consciousness and thus he was the pioneer of Gaudiya preaching mission. Srila Prabhupada also got the vision of his spiritual Master and extended his mission throughout the world and awarded everybody this opportunity to glorify Supreme Lord without any qualification.
|Conclusion: – The words spoken by pure devotees of the Lord are Sarva sruti Manoharah i.e. more pleasing to the Lord than the hymns of Vedas and such words when repeated by even a neophyte practitioner have the same purifying effect rather than the flowery descriptions of pastimes of Lords done by non-devotees which practically has no effect on the lives of the people.|
